Course Description
The focus of this course is to help students attain a level of proficiency using the applications that make up the Microsoft Office Suite. The school year is divided into four (4) nine-week periods in which the class will focus on one application each period. The first nine-week period will focus on Microsoft Word, the second nine-week period will focus on Microsoft Powerpoint, the third period will focus on Microsoft Excel, and the fourth period will focus on Microsoft Access. For now we will focus on just the first nine-week period.
Pre-requisites & Computer Requirements
The operating system Windows 7 is required for this course. Students must have access to this operating system by the 2nd week of class.
The application software that is required for this course is Office 2010 Professional. Students must have access to this software (including Word 2010, Excel 2010, Power Point 2010 and Access 2010) by the 3rd week of class. You may not use Microsoft Works. You may NOT use Office 2003 or Office 2007.
If you do not currently have access to the required software, you have a few options:
1) you may use any computer lab at any SCS school
2) you may use Virtual Lab which is explained to you in our online course
3) you can purchase Office 2010 Professional for $11 at the Teaching and Learning Center. You will need proof that you are a current student, such as your course schedule and student id.
IF YOU HAVE A MACINTOSH
My recommendation is that you use SCS Virtual Lab. It's free and will give you experience connecting to a network environment. For instructions on using the Virtual Lab, please see the link "SCS’s MyLab" on the Course Content Home Page in the online course.
MYLAB and Blackboard:
This course utilizes both Blackboard and MYLAB. Both of these are computer based platforms used for the student to interact with the course. Quizzes and examinations are taken in Blackboard while chapter homework assignments are submitted in MYLAB. Both of these programs grade the material students submit. While they both do a good job grading, at times there can be errors. If you feel you may not have been graded correctly, notify me and I can check this out. You can see the material you submit to MYLAB grader and see what is counted wrong. If it appears you did the material as instructed, let me know and I will check this out. You will need an access code to register in MYLAB. The MYLAB access code will come along with your textbook packet. You will also need the course number information and that can be found below. This code is how you register on the Pearson MYLAB web site for your weekly assignments. It is strongly recommended that you use Internet Explorer Browser 8 or higher for this portion of the course. This browser is more stable while using MYLAB. MYLAB will not operate in other browsers such as Firefox, Safari or Chrome.
Use this code to enroll in the Fall 2013 course for MYLAB: CRSABCs-460032
Blackboard:
You will use Blackboard to receive important documents from the instructor and other support documentation. Your grades will be entered in the Blackboard Grade Book. It is highly recommended that you utilize the Mozilla Firefox browser for this portion of the course. To start the program, type the following URL into the address bar: https://scs.blackboard.com/webapps/login. This will get you to the logon screen for Blackboard.
